History of Claremont:
Claremont was first settled in the early 19th century, but the first big wave of settlers arrived from England in the 1830s. By the 1840s, the hamlet had grown into a thriving business centre with carpenters, harness makers, shoemakers and other businesses. A two-story brick building built in 1851 and which housed a general store which still stands today. Claremont was originally called Noble's Corners after Thomas Noble, the first man to open business in the village.
The arrival of the railroad in 1884 brought new businesses into the village and it continued to grow. But the two-land bypass road constructed in 1973 diverted traffic away from the village and slowed its growth. In the 1970s, an airport was planned in neighboring areas, but the plan never took off, as much of the business moved elsewhere in the GTA.
