History of Richmond Hill
The village of Richmond Hill began to take form in the early 1800s Abner Miles, an innkeeper and merchant from York, settled on Yonge Street at Major Mackenzie Drive. He opened an inn, a store, and an ashery, creating a starting point that would spawn future development.
By 1830, the name 'Richmond Hill' had become uniform. The 1830s promoted the development of Yonge Street. The first post office, another inn and two more general stores opened. By 1850, a village had taken shape from Major Mackenzie Drive to neighboring streets. Over the next three decades, the town grew rapidly, and by 1873 Richmond Hill was considered a village.
With the introduction of the automobile in the early 1900s came a growth in population and employment in Richmond Hill. Building slowed during the war years, but the post war suburban phenomenon had a major positive impact on Richmond Hill. In 1957, Richmond Hill expanded its borders to the east and acquired town status. Since then, Richmond Hill has grown in every capacity including employment, population, residential and commercial development.
